Last Wednesday marked International Women’s Day, an important celebration of women across the world. So, it seemed fitting that this week’s Monday Motivation should be about inspiring women, and I believe that the This Girl Can project is a perfect example of this.
If you haven’t heard about it before, it’s a
celebration of active women who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their face gets.
Funded by The National Lottery, this project hopes to inspire women, of all ages and backgrounds, to push themselves beyond expectations, and be proud of what they can achieve.
Although there are a number of different women involved, here are a couple of my favourite stories.
For Debbie, running with a blade was intimidating at first. Though she had run on two legs, the blade meant she had to think about things like uneven ground which previously hadn’t been a concern. But Debbie, 51, has gotten used to it. She goes on long runs and sprints a few times a week. She finds a good run sets her up mentally for the rest of the day, and can’t imagine life without it.
First-time mum Stephanie, 31, found that, during and after her pregnancy, her relationship with exercise changed. When first pregnant, Stephanie felt nervous about exercising. However, as she gained confidence she started doing light pre-natal exercise. After a break post-baby, Stephanie tried a Mumhood class, where mums do exercises while holding their babies. Stephanie loves them because they give her a chance to socialise with women going through many of the same things. Plus, there’s a practical element to using your baby as a weight; every week, that “weight” gets heavier.
Both of these women show that it’s possible to stay active regardless of your age, or your circumstances, as long as you’re willing to put in the time and effort. And if you are, you’ll soon notice some fantastic results that will motivate you even further! Plus, it can be a lot of fun!
As well as being inspired by incredible women, this project encourages you to get involved yourself, providing plenty of tips and advice. If you want to find out more, just click here.
So, next time you’re feeling a little bit down and discouraged, take a look at the This Girl Can website, and remind yourself that you can do it.
Who are you inspired by?
Don’t forget to follow, with a new post every day at 6pm during the week, and 1pm on a weekend!
