Revision: Lecture Notes

Exams are just a few weeks away, so it’s probably a good idea to start revising properly (if you haven’t already!)

But, before you read on, I would suggest creating a study timetable, which you can find all about here.

Done? Great! Let’s begin.

Although attending lectures may not be compulsory, it is an important part of learning at University. So, hopefully you have attended at least some of your lectures, if not all. If so, you should have some great lecture notes that will be really handy when it comes to revision! Don’t worry if not, as it isn’t vital, but it will provide you with a starting point.

When it comes to revision, a lot of students don’t actually turn to their lecture notes. They may read them over once or twice, but they probably won’t do anything active with them. Don’t make this mistake! They’re such a useful resource, so it’s really important to make the most out of them!

If you stick to the following steps, you should be able to retain a lot of the key information for each subject, and then you can go on to consider other resources, and secondary material (as that’s important too!)

  1. Re-read your notes, highlighting/underlining the key sections.
  2. Then, condense your notes, using the sections you’ve just highlighted as a guide to what’s important and what’s not. I would suggest using note (index) cards for this, but you could also put them into mind map form, or simply bullet-point each key point. It’s totally up to you, but for the sake of this post we’ll be sticking with note cards!
  3. I would then suggest re-reading your cards once a day, highlighting key words or phrases as you do so.
  4. Then, once you’re confident with the subject, you could use this information to create connections between different concepts (if that’s what your module requires!) Transfer your newly condensed information onto concept cards, writing a key word, or theme, on one side of the card, and an explanation of it on the other side.
  5. Test yourself! Ask a family member or friend to read out a theme, and see if you can remember what goes with it. This way you’ll be actively engaging with the topic, and you’re more likely to remember the key information!

Of course, there is so much more that you could do with lecture notes, but this is a revision technique that I use and love.

As I said earlier, it is also important to read over secondary resources too, as your lecture notes are just a basic guide, but I would definitely suggest using them as a starting point if you’re feeling a bit unsure about a topic.
